Awards Ceremony 2011

On Tuesday 23 August 2011, the Science and Industry Endowment Fund (SIEF) held its first ever Awards Ceremony at Mural Hall, Parliament House, Canberra, to present the inaugural SIEF John Stocker Postgraduate Scholarships and Postdoctoral Fellowships, and announce the CSIRO Macquarie University Chair in Wireless Communications.

The event brought together past beneficiaries of the Fund with the inaugural recipients of the newly introduced scholarships and fellowships to celebrate the Fund’s role in supporting Australia's scientific talent through promotion of science education and visionary research.

Senator the Hon. Kim Carr, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, who launched the rejuvenated SIEF in 2009, was a fitting guest of honour to mark the achievements of the Fund. The Minister spoke of the rich history of the Fund, dating back to 1926. He also highlighted the revitalised Fund’s key role as a vehicle for the development of ideas, and the value of those ideas to Australia’s national interest.

Senator Carr, together with Dr John Stocker, presented the six Postdoctoral Fellowships and three Postgraduate Scholarships that were awarded this year. The Trustee of the Fund, Dr Megan Clark, paid tribute to the recipients and conveyed her confidence that they would make major contributions to science through the course of their careers in the rich tradition of previous beneficiaries of the Fund.

Professor Stephen Hanly was announced as the successful candidate for the SIEF-funded CSIRO Macquarie University Chair in Wireless Communications. The nature of the Chair reflects that the gifts to the SIEF from CSIRO were made possible through the licensing of CSIRO's Wireless LAN intellectual property. Professor Stephen Hanly holds a PhD from Cambridge University and undergraduate science degrees from the University of Western Australia, and will be returning to Australia from the National University of Singapore in 2012 to take up his role.

In addition to Senator Carr and the Trustee, guests at the Event included Dr John Stocker (former Chair of CSIRO), Dr John O’Sullivan (an inventor of the WLAN technology and major donor to SIEF), members of the Fund’s Advisory Council and Expert Panel and members of CSIRO’s Board and Executive.

In his media release in relation to the event, Senator Carr said, "The John Stocker Fellowships and Scholarships encourage young researchers to do postgraduate study or post-doctoral training and I have no doubt they will play an important role in Australian and global science. The awards have been funded through the Science and Industry Endowment Fund, which is a wonderful vehicle for extending our scientific reach and potential through investing in science education in Australia.”
