SIEF Event 2012

On Tuesday 4 September 2012, the Science and Industry Endowment Fund (SIEF) held its annual Ceremony at Queens Hall, Parliament House, Victoria, to present the SIEF John Stocker Postgraduate Scholarships and Postdoctoral Fellowships, and announce two new programs: The Science and Industry Endowment Fund – Australian Academy of Science Fellowships to the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings, and the SIEF Special Research Program Synchrotron Science.

The event brought together past beneficiaries of the Fund with the recipients of the scholarships and fellowships to celebrate the Fund’s role in supporting Australia's scientific talent through promotion of science education and visionary research.

Senator Evans, together with Dr John Stocker, presented five Postdoctoral Fellowships, three Postgraduate Scholarships and one honours Scholarship that were awarded this year.  Dr Stocker wished the Fellows and Scholars great success and professional fulfilment.

In addition to Senator Evans and the Trustee, guests at the Event included Dr John Stocker (former Chair of CSIRO), Dr John O’Sullivan (an inventor of the WLAN technology and major donor to SIEF), members of the Fund’s Advisory Council, Expert Panel and Undergraduate Degree Panel, and distinguished guests such as Nobel Laureate Prof Brian Schmidt.

Prof Tom Spurling, who is about to publish an account of the history of the Science and Industry Endowment Fund, gave a presentation about the rich history that underpins the Fund.
